GUM DISEASE
Gum Disease
The periodontium, also known as the bone and gum tissues that surround the teeth, is the foundation for good oral and overall health. When bacteria infect the periodontium, gum disease occurs. There are two forms of gum disease: Gingivitis and Periodontitis.
- Gingivitis is contained within the gum tissues only and is a reversible and easily treatable disease with proper home care and regular professional cleanings. Symptoms of gingivitis include red puffy gums that easily bleed during cleaning. Mild to moderate pain or discomfort when brushing or flossing is also common with gingivitis.
- Periodontitis is a more advance form of gum disease that not only affects the gum tissues but also involves bone loss around teeth, resulting in possible tooth loss. Unfortunately, periodontitis is not a curable disease, but is able to be converted to an inactive state through treatments by a hygienist or periodontist. Periodontitis often requires a deeper cleaning and, in more advance cases, may require minor gum surgery. Patients who maintain proper home care and receive professional cleanings regularly at our office have a great prognosis and can maintain their teeth for the entirety of their life.
